Polynesia, Tahiti, ca. 19th century CE. An elegantly formed, hand-carved tropical hardwood hand club with a sinuous silhouette. The coloration of the hardwood is beautiful, with a rich, reddish background and visible black grains. The form includes a handle with a curved upper portion above a series of cylindrical grooves and a body with an elongated columnar form that broadens at its center before tapering to a blunt end. Clubs such as this one were used for combat and as demonstrations of the prestige of their owners. Some clubs were even given ceremonial names after they had been used to kill a certain number of people! Size: 2.3" W x 18" H (5.8 cm x 45.7 cm); 19.5" H (49.5 cm) on included custom stand.
