Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 1898 CE. A wonderful miniature tripartite traveling icon, made of silver and depicting three religious scenes in bas relief with details delineated in sky blue, navy blue, yellow, and green enamel, and hallmarks on the bottom of the central panel ("98" and a makers mark with initials, perhaps WB). Christ as Pantocrator - delivering a blessing and holding an open book of Gospels - is depicted on the central panel. On the side folding panels are the Virgin Mary and Joseph, both gesturing toward Christ. When folded, the visible cover depicts the Orthodox Cross, with two cross bars at the top and a slanted cross bar at the bottom. On the left and right of the cross bar are the letters "IC" and "XC" respectively, the abbreviation for Christ. Flanking the cross are a spear and a cane, while below it is a skull of Golgotha, symbolizing the skull of Adam. All is set in a circular format and surrounded by a beaded border with leafy foliage at the corners. Size: 4.25" W x 1.75" H (10.8 cm x 4.4 cm) open; 1.625" W x 1.75" H (4.1 cm x 4.4 cm) closed. Silver quality: 95%. Weight: 109.8 grams.
Additional Cyrillic inscriptions may be abbreviations for "King of Glory" and "Son of God".

Condition
Minor surface wear commensurate with age, but most of the enamelwork is well preserved. Imagery is still strong. Hinges remain and allow the icon to be folded.
