Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely delineated in egg tempera pigments and gold leaf on gesso on wood, a wonderful icon of Christ Enthroned, the Greek letters on his halo with the cross standing for, "I am that I am." Christ is dressed in an opulent manner, dripping with luxurious pearls and jewels on his regal garments and crown. Over his vermilion red episcopal robe, which is further embellished with golden crosses, he wears an omophorion (stole) that is also adorned with crosses. Christ makes a gesture of benediction with his right hand and holds an open gospel in his left. Sitting upon an elaborately decorated golden throne, with glowing candles/lanterns rising above, Christ is presented with both priestly and regal attributes, as king and eternal priest. A magnificent icon, replete with impressive artistry and layers of symbolism. Size: 17.25" W x 21" H (43.8 cm x 53.3 cm)
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Traditionally found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."
