Beautifully delineated in egg tempera and liberal gold leaf on wood, an iconographically rich icon depicting the Archangel Michael blowing the Trumpet of Judgement as he rides his red winged horse. In addition to the trumpet in his right hand, St. Michael holds another object in his left hand, perhaps a stone or lance used to conquer the demon below his winged horse. The scene is replete with symbolic iconography. The rainbow that arches between his hands, for example, symbolizes Michael's covenant with God, and the dark waters swirling below symbolize the evil surrounding the drowning city of Babylon. Size: 14" L x 12" W (35.6 cm x 30.5 cm)
As Chief Commander of the Heavenly hosts, Saint Michael bravely challenged the Devil. Satan, after all, was Michael's opponent in the battle for Heaven. The figures' gestures and motion are characteristically dramatic. Archangels are understood to be helpers and allies who offer dedicated protection through life's trials and travails. Their names usually end in the suffix "ael" or "iel" - Michael, Rafael, Gabriel, Ariel, Ezekiel, Barachiel, Uriel - meaning "Shining One" in Hebrew.
