Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. late 19th century CE. Delineated in egg tempera and gold leaf on linen and wood, an icon depicting Michael the Archangel riding a red winged horse raising his hands in a victorious gesture -perhaps signifying success in battling the Prince of Darkness - representing all that is evil - and wearing sumptuous wine-colored vestments and a golden crown. Above is a roundel of Christ Emmanuel who will judge the souls, weighing them on the scale of his mercy and justice. To the left and right are the patron saints of the individuals who commissioned the icon. Size: 10.5" W x 12.25" H (26.7 cm x 31.1 cm)
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."

Condition
Expected surface wear with pigment and gilt losses as shown, age fissures and nice areas of craquelure. Verso has difficult to decipher incised inscription, small losses, and scratches. With some restoration, this icon would be a welcome addition to any collection; priced under value to make that possible.
