Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely-delineated in egg tempera, gold leaf, and gesso on wood, an icon depicting the "All Seeing Eye of God" theme, sometimes called "As Seen Through the Eyes of the Lord." This icon depicts God in Heaven watching over the faithful of earth; the overall design is comprised of concentric circles at the center of which is the youthful Christ Emmanuel, surrounded by the "Eyes of God" within a red sun-like orb - as Jesus is understood as the "Sun of Righteousness." The face of Mary, the mother of God, is depicted above the eyes at the top of the circle, and symbols of the four Evangelists - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - are in the other surrounding circles. Three winged seraphim occupy the lateral and bottom sides of the dark, star-adorned rim; finally, all the way at the top is God the Father upon billowing clouds. Size: 6.875" W x 9" H (17.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."
