Eastern Asia, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning gilt silver travelling icon in the form of a diptych intricately adorned in emerald, cobalt, scarlet, and cyan cloisonne enamel to feature a central cross over burgundy-colored velvet on the exterior of each door. The elaborate piece opens to feature 2 egg tempera, gold, and gesso on wood icon paintings: Saint James on the left and Saint George on the right, each surrounded by a stippled border of silvered copper. Appearing almost as mirror images of one another, both saints ride atop a horse as it tramples their respective foes; St. James over a Moor and St. George over a dragon. A petite latch in the form of a bird keeps the icon securely closed, while a gilt brass chain is at the top.
