Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely four-paneled traveling icon made of brass with 27% gold gilt on the interior panels. The cover panel exterior presents with a relief scene of floral motifs, architecture, and a central Russian Orthodox Christian Cross, while the other three exterior panels are unadorned. The interior panels are divided into four relief scenes from the life of Christ or the life of Mary. At the top of each are four additional scenes in the onion dome area, and the shape of the icon when closed mirrors the form of a Russian church. In order to support traveling priests on missions, religious objects, like this example, were made so that they were small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through a difficult landscape. This beautiful icon most certainly caught the imagination of and attention of the devout or new converts with its lustrous gold that illustrated the Christian teachings. Gilding: 27% gold; size when open: 16.187" L x 7.125" H (41.1 cm x 18.1 cm); folded: 4.125" W (10.5 cm);

Condition
The hinges work and fold easily. Surface wear and softening of details on exterior panel. Interior gilt fading and surface wear commensurate with age. A nice patina on the brass and very detailed!
