North America, Republic of Texas, ca. 1836 to 1845 CE. A beautifully personalized example of an NCO/militia sword, with niello bronze inlay along the upper two-thirds of its thin steel blade. This inlay features delicate floral motifs that sinuously wrap their way down the blade. The ornate handle would have been added by the man who carried it rather than being standard issue, and features a pommel in the form of a suit of armor's plumed helmet, a ribbed cow bone handle, and a short crossguard with engraved motifs. Although this sword is of the same style as those made for American non-commissioned officers, it has clearly been highly personalized for its owner, who lived and fought in the short-lived Republic of Texas. Size: 4.55" W x 36.85" H (11.6 cm x 93.6 cm)
The Model 1840 NCO sword has a distinguished history. The US Army contracted it from Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) of Solingen, Prussia for 1000 swords, then N.P. Ames Manufacturing Company of Cabotville, Massachusetts in 1844, Ames Manufacturing Company of Cabotville (1847), and finally Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicoppee, Massachusetts in the 1850s. Ames manufactured its first swords incorrectly so that they had a blunt edge, but soldiers found a way to use them as a club!
