Fridolin Leiber (German, 1853-1912). "Les Deux Chemins" (The Two Paths). "F. Leiber" on lower right. A didactic 19th century print. Fridolin Leiber presents two alternative routes in life - one for those who partake in alcohol a bit too much (on the right) and another for those who abstain (on the left). For example, the first image on the left depicts a young school boy dressed in blue with a church in the background and an angel about to crown him with a golden halo. Size of print: 12.5" W x 16.25" H (31.8 cm x 41.3 cm); size of frame: 17.75" W x 20.75" H (45.1 cm x 52.7 cm)
The caption below translates, "The young boy who does not indulge in alcoholic drinks will be studious and virtuous." In contrast the first image on the right shows three boys who are drinking and smoking as a skeletal devil pours a bottle over a flame above a boy who is guzzling from a bottle. The caption translates, "The young boy who does indulge in alcoholic drinks will be lazy and vicious." The final images on each side present these individuals' lots in life. The righteous boy ends up with a loving family, while the no-good kid has become a jailbird.
