Camille Pissarro (French, 1830-1903), "Entrance to the Village of Voisins" (1872). Etching was created in Paris by Henri Lefort, ca. 1875. Camille Pissarro was a French landscape painter who had an immense influence on Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists. Born in St. Thomas, he relocated to Paris during his youth and contributed to the Impressionist movement with friends including Edgar Degas and Claude Monet. Pisarro later became active as a Post-Impressionist artist. This etching is after his "Entrance to the Village of Voisins" currently housed in the Musee d'Orsay. This composition depicts a tranquil spring day - a transitional early spring day when the leaves on the trees have not entirely made their appearance, and the sun is quite low as evidenced by the long shadows cast across the path. Notice how Pissarro has lowered the horizon line and how the trees dwarf the quaint houses. Size: 6.375" L x 7" W (16.2 cm x 17.8 cm); 12.625" L x 12.625" W (32.1 cm x 32.1 cm) framed
Pissarro created this landscape after returning to France from a stay in London. He was not terribly content in England and wrote to the art critic Theodore Duret, "I want to go back to France as soon as possible. Yes, my dear Duret, I will not stay here. It is only abroad that one feels how beautiful and how grand and how welcoming France is."
In June of 1871, Pissarro arrived in Louveciennes and remained there until April 1872, when he returned to Pontoise where he would reside for the next ten years. Quite happy to be back in France, Pissarro grew more and more confident in his abilities as an artist - producing many paintings. What's more, he broke free from the older generation of artists and attempted a variety of new ideas and approaches, including the new viewpoint depicted in this composition.
Lefort was the President of the French Society of Etchers, and also did a noteworthy etchings of George Washington and Christopher Columbus.
