Southeast Asia, Philippines, Luzon Island, Ifugao culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century. A fantastic hand-carved wooden male deity figure known as bulul (also bul-ul or tinagtaggu). He squats on an integral pedestal with his legs drawn up to his body, and his arms crossed with elbows resting on knees. The shoulders are slightly hunched forward, and the visage is simple with a pursed mouth, a broad nose, projecting ears, and circular incised eyes, altogether giving him a very attentive appearance. An annular recessed area sits at the center of his close-cut coiffure. Bulul are highly stylized ancestral effigies that are meant to spiritually guard important crops like rice. Size: 6.9" W x 24.8" H (17.5 cm x 63 cm); 26.8" H (68.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Sculptural art in Ifugao is not just decorative, but also crucial to the wellbeing of the community. Traditionally the men carve sculptures like this, and women weave colorful textiles. Bulul, carved from a single piece of wood and representing the human body in a stylized form, are often in male and female pairs, and ritually consecrated with pig or chicken blood, and then placed into rice fields and granaries, where they function as guardians.
