Central Asia / Near East, Persia, Qajar Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a beautiful cast iron and brass casket or box, with a hinged lid latch, and articulating handles. The body is cast iron in a rectangular form and rests on four corner bracket feet with brass handles set to the sides and top of the lid. The entire surface is nearly completely covered with a mesmerizing ground of foliate vine motifs featuring human figures - seated on thrones, on horseback, and standing - as well as animals including lions, serpents, felines, and deer shown hunting and running. Note that the lid has a central plaque featuring mounted horsemen killing a dragon, and below the latch are two men seated on what are perhaps thrones, while on the opposite side of the verso is a pair of seated demons or divs, speckled and horned that imitate the seated men. The interior is lined with a mid-20th century blue silk lining over a cushion and cardstock - perfect for storing delicate items. Size: 7.75" L x 5.75" W x 5.5" H (19.7 cm x 14.6 cm x 14 cm)

Condition
Restoration to the interior base with a newer wood panel which does not affect overall presentation. The rest of the iron and brass components are original. Interior and lid are lined with a modern/vintage silk cloth lining and cushion. Minor surface abrasions, and some softening of details, but intact and very good. Lid articulates as do handles, and latch. A few mineral deposits in recessed areas.
