Near East, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful Persian painting with a dramatic hunting theme. The action-packed composition includes eight hunters on horseback wielding bows and arrows, spears, and ropes in pursuit of deer. The figures are arranged in two horizontal rows amidst the hilly landscape. Royal hunting scenes were a favorite subject of Persian and Mughal painting traditions. Although sometimes created as illustrations for related stories, this particular painting was probably never part of a manuscript but rather collected in an album of paintings, drawings, and calligraphy. Size of painting: 12.5" W x 7" H (31.8 cm x 17.8 cm); size of frame: 1.7" L x 18.5" W x 11.5" H (4.3 cm x 47 cm x 29.2 cm)
Although the painting is Persian, many of the motifs are characteristic of Mughal paintings, such as the cityscape in the distant background and the naturalism of the running animals. The theme of a princely hunt was popular in both Mughal and Persian empires.

Condition
Painting has not been examined outside the frame. It is slightly loose within the frame. The painting itself is in very nice condition with one small fissure in the paint behind the red horse and another on the upper right corner. The painting has darkened slightly with age, but all of the imagery and figures are very clear.
