Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Lower Ramu River region, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A fascinating ancestral figure with the features of a hornbill bird, hand-carved from hardwood, with a characteristically abstract presentation. This intriguing figure, known as a "kandimboang," has typical anthropomorphic features - such as muscular legs, openwork arms, wide hips, delineated genitalia, and a bulbous posterior - which are emphasized by striking avian features, like narrow ovoid eyes slanted inward and a prominent curved beak with a high central crest. The dark-brown coloration is characteristic of charming Papua New Guinea carvings. Size: 2.1" W x 9.5" H (5.3 cm x 24.1 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.
