European, Italy, 19th century. A wonderful trio of Grand Tour paintings inspired by ancient Roman wall paintings, the largest one hand signed by E.P. Fenderico at the lower right. The first painting depicts a Nereid (one of the 50 sea nymph daughters of Nereus who were goddesses representing the bounties of the sea and protectors of sailors and fishermen) riding a hippocampus (fish-tailed horse) in the Aegean Sea accompanied by another hippocampus along with two pairs of dolphins. The second painting depicts an ichthyocentaur - a sea centaur with the lower body of a horse, the upper body of a bearded man, and wings comprised of sea creature parts rather than feathers - accompanied by dolphins. Perhaps he represents Aphros (personification of foam) or Bythos (personification of the abyss) who both famously carried Aphrodite to shore in a cockle shell after her sea birth. Size of largest (sight view): 6.5" L x 16.9" W (16.5 cm x 42.9 cm) Size (frame): 13.5" L x 24.125" W (34.3 cm x 61.3 cm)
Finally, the largest presents a scene including a king raising his sword and a donkey around a central fire accompanied by female attendants or goddesses and a petite demon on a pillar to the far left. Perhaps this painting is an imaginative reference to the story of Midas and Apollo. According to legend, a satyr named Marsyas challenged Apollo, the god of music, to a contest. King Midas and the mountain god were to be the judges. When the performances came to an end, Tmolus chose Apollo as the winner, but King Midas chose the satyr. In response, Apollo grew angry and transformed Midas's ears into donkey ears to symbolize his foolishness.
