American, 4th quarter of 19th century. A beautifully constructed doll, made of sturdy muslin and stuffed with what looks and feels like raw cotton. Note that the oilcloth head has seams at the back and running from ear to ear, however, it has no center seam to interrupt the face. This makes for a lovely visage with oil painted facial features and hair. Although the red lips and blue eyes have faded over time, they are still visible in good light. Among our favorite features are the delicately stitched fingers of the hands which are also comprised of oilcloth. The doll's forward-facing feet - constructed as contiguous with the legs - turn out slightly, which is quite endearing. In addition, the body presents an hourglass figure that resolves in an ample inverted heart-shape upon which the legs were placed, allowing the doll to sit upright. Size: 16.5" H (41.9 cm)
The doll also comes with its original machine-stitched dress which was created from a light blue cotton batiste which has faded to a grey/taupe hue over the years. In addition, the doll wears a pair of lace-trimmed cotton bloomers and an eyelet-trimmed cotton slip - both ot these are later garments.
This doll has been dated to the fourth quarter of the 19th century based on its construction details, clothing, and family history. Adding to its special qualities is the fact that we know of its provenance. This doll once belonged to a woman named Kate Allison. Kate had the doll from childhood, and according to the family, it was probably handed down to her from her mother. Kate in turn passed the doll down to her family member, Emma Helen Owen Nenney, to give to Emma's granddaughter Susan.

Condition
The doll body is all original with no replaced limbs. At some point, the left arm was re-attached and is slightly shorter than the right one as a result. There is expected playwear of course, the most notable being creases to the oilcloth head and a break in the seam along the left side of the face, but the overall condition of the body is very good.
