Anonymous European artist after Fra Angelico (15th c). The Annunciation with Saint Peter Martyr - oil on copper, 19th century. A beautiful miniature interpretation of one of the frescoes in the cells of the cloister of San Antonio near San Marco in Florence which Fra Angelico created during the 15th century. At the far left is St. Peter standing in prayer behind the Archangel Gabriel at the moment when he is announcing to the Virgin Mary that she will birth the son of God. The architecture of this beautiful room boasts an elegant ceiling graced by arches that extend beyond the painting and are echoed by the arch of the finely carved gilt wood frame. Gabriel is depicted with pronounced wings protruding from his back and a golden halo. Mary leans toward Gabriel is dressed in elegant robes and her beautiful visage is also framed by a radiant halo. Condition
No inpainting. Minute scuffs/abrasions commensurate with age; otherwise painting is in excellent overall condition. Frame has a few expected scuffs/abrasions and dates later than painting but complements it beautifully. Pigments and gilding have been tested via x-ray fluorescence.
