- Lot Description
Samuel Simpson Carr (British-born American, 1837-1908). "Spring" oil on canvas, late 19th century. Signed S.S. Carr on lower left. A bucolic scene painted by landscape painter Samuel Simpson Carr who was originally from England but relocated to New York City in 1862 at age 25. Carr trained at the Royal School of Design in Chester, England and after moving to New York, studied mechanical drawing. In this composition, Carr, who is best known for pastoral landscapes, presents a herd of sheep grazing on the spring grass beside a creek with a stone wall and a grove of pink blossomed trees behind them. On the far right, beyond another stone wall, is a charming farmhouse, and the skies with billowing clouds above demonstrate the influence of John Constable, known for his meteorological depictions of skies. A beautiful painting complemented by a luxurious gilded frame of thick, high quality gold - some areas as high as 67% gold (equivalent to 16K). Size of painting: 19.25" W x 13.375" H (48.9 cm x 34 cm) Size of frame: 31.75" W x 25.75" H (80.6 cm x 65.4 cm)
This painting was created during the Industrial Revolution era. Of course, upon first glance, its subject matter may not conjure associations with the Industrial Revolution; however, the Industrial Revolution had an immense impact on British landscape painting, and Carr was likely influenced by the artistic themes of his native country. Technological advances as well as the rise of factories and urban developments devastated the countryside, impacting the prices of agricultural products and displacing many farmers who no longer could afford to farm their modest plots of land. In light of this, British landscape painters made seemingly quiet political statements by painting beautiful views of the disappearing bucolic countryside during the Industrial Revolution like this stupendous oil on canvas by Samuel Simpson Carr.
