United States, Southwest, New Mexico, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted wooden Cross wonderfully decorated with appliques depicting religious iconography and rising from a plaster/stucco plinth. The appliques include the head of Christ (from a wooden Santo) at the center of the Cross, the sun and the moon flanking Jesus' head to symbolize the eclipse of Jesus during the Passion, the skull and crossbones representing Golgotha at the bottom of the Cross, and various instruments of the Passion such as the ladder, nails, chalice, pincers, the hand which struck Christ, dice, the money bag with silver representing the price of Judas' betrayal, and the seamless robe of Jesus. The front face of the Cross is painted a creamy white, and various appliques are painted with red and gold hues outlined in black. A wonderful example of religious folk art from New Mexico.
