Attributed to Juan Ramon Velasquez (New Mexican, 1820-1902), Passion Santo of Jesus, ca. 1865 to 1890 CE. A very large, hand-carved, and polychromed wooden bulto depicting Jesus Christ standing erectly on a thick painted board and delineated with a dramatic visage and body type that are characteristic of Juan Ramon Velasquez' works. Note his trapezoidal torso, narrow waist, and conical skirt-like lower section and those mesmerizing, lashed eyes, thick arched brows, and stylized facial hair and coiffure. In addition to the bold carving style, the details were painted on gessoed canvas (and possibly leather). Velasquez depicted Christ with as much of His suffering body visible as is possible - blood streaming from the stigmata (wounds he suffered during the Crucifixion) on his chest, wrists, feet, as well as the forehead (location of Crown of Thorns), cheeks, nose, and mouth. The separately created arms were joined to the shoulders via textile, resulting in nice articulation. A very special work from this legendary santero! Size: 10.5" W x 34.9" H (26.7 cm x 88.6 cm).
Juan Ramon Velasquez is among the major santeros of the late 19th century - in the esteemed company of Juan Miguel Herrera and Jose de Gracia Gonzales. Once this generation passed away, traditional santero-work came to a demise. Velasquez's oeuvre consists primarily of Passion figures for the Penitente Moradas (religious houses of worship for Spanish-American Roman Catholic communities in northern and central New Mexico as well as southern Colorado). A prolific, itinerant carver, Velasquez's santos graced the villages of Canijilon, Los Ojos, Tierra Amarilla, and nearly every community west of the Rio Grande.
