Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. A sumptuous Buddhist Pancharaksha manuscript printed on palm paper with a pair of lacquered wooden covers. The outside faces of the covers are illustrated with carved motifs featuring Pancarakas, nude female goddesses, adored with skulls and dancing upon corpses. The back-cover exterior is carved with a scene of woman walking to a temple. The interior of the front cover is painted with "colorful" scenes of nude woman and deities embracing, some are holding kapalas, dorjes, and the ritualistic kartia knife. The central demon has an erect penis and stands upon a recumbent bull while a woman offers him a kapala filled with blood. The back interior cover is painted with the 5 Tathagatas. There is quite a lot of symbolism packed into just the covers! The interior folio has 15 loose horizontal pages, each containing 6 lines of stamped Pali script on both sides. At the center of each page is a hand-painted illustration of buddhas and other figures. Size: 20.5" L x 4.5" W (52.1 cm x 11.4 cm)
