Western Europe, Italy or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A dazzling shell cameo pendant with a silver backing and double border of circular glass inlays strung on a modern strand to be wearable. Ovoid in form, the beautiful pendant is expertly hand-carved with the bust of the Greek god Hermes - or Roman god Mercury - shown in profile and facing right. The ancient messenger god is seen in his traditional winged helmet, that sits atop a classically curly coiffure comprised of thick, luscious coils as his youthful profile displays a generously lidded eye, a straight nose, a naturalistic mouth, and a prominent Adam's apple. Size (of pendant): 2" L x 1.4" W (5.1 cm x 3.6 cm); Size (of strand): 22" L (55.9 cm); silver quality: 84%; weight: 16 grams
Note how the artisan has skillfully sculpted the layers of the shell to create a stunning contrast; the bust presenting in a hue of creamy white - reminiscent of Classical sculpture and 19th century plaster casts - and the ground displaying a rich shade of mocha, while the wing of the helmet is then further highlighted by natural, mottled hues of espresso, caramel, and vanilla. A truly breathtaking adornment!
