Native American, Midwestern to Western United States, Plains Tribes, ca. early 19th century CE. A wonderful and tightly coiled pectoral pendant made of fiber and porcupine quills. The coilwork spirals inward and forms a slightly domed form. The fibers are then covered with porcupine quills that are bent and then wrapped over the fibers. The quills are not applied in several areas, and instead a blue thread was used to create geometric tribal symbols. These pectorals were used to adorn hair, quivers, or as chest pendants. Forming this piece demanded immense skill! Size of pectoral: 2.675" W x .675" H (6.8 cm x 1.7 cm) case: 6" L x 1.375" W x 8" H (15.2 cm x 3.5 cm x 20.3 cm)
