North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A delightful pottery bowl, exhibiting a shallow basin and wide, flared rim, all supported by a ring-form base. Boasting hues of teal, lemon, cobalt, mulberry, and black atop a white glaze ground, the interior of this elegant vessel is skillfully hand-painted with a series of 4 crescent moon motifs, each with a tondo of a flower, surrounded by scrolling vegetal designs. A border of undulating striations adorns the rim. Alternatively, the exterior features a plain white glaze with beautiful craquelure in some areas. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Note how the perforated foot of this example is strung with a modern, metal wire allowing the graceful dish to be easily suspended for show. Size: 14.6" Diameter x 3.8" H (37.1 cm x 9.7 cm)
