North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a beautiful and vibrant pottery serving plate or platter, with a wonderful interlocking geometric motif hand-painted on the basin. The broad dish rests on a ring foot, the exterior and basin covered in a creamy white slip then overpainted with saffron yellow, cobalt blue, seafoam green, and pink-maroon hues outlined in black. The interlocking girih motif and abstract foliate shapes are directly influenced by Islamic architecture and the Fez region is renowned for their Fassi pottery, a blend of Islamic, Spanish, and tribal Berber patterns. The ring foot is pierced for suspension to display on a wall when not in use and the base is marked in Arabic script with "Fez." Size: 14.25" Diameter x 3" H (36.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
