Americas, Mission period, oil on canvas, 19th century. A large-scale painting depicting a sublime rendering of the Archangel Gabriel visiting a sleeping child in a lavish custom frame. According to Christian tradition, Gabriel oftentimes visits people when they are dreaming. For example, the Bible tells of Gabriel visiting Joseph in a dream to tell him that he will be the father of Jesus Christ. In addition, many believe that archangels help people solve problens when they are dreaming. Here, Gabriel, dressed in robes of billowing, white drapery, appears between two trees above a dreaming blond child dressed in red and holding a basket of flowers. Gabriel holds one of his chief attributes, a branch of white lilies, in his right hand, and a serpent, perhaps signifying the removal of evil from the child's dreams, in his left. Holy Light emanates from his head and wings. Size of painting: 23.5" L x 17.375" W (59.7 cm x 44.1 cm) Size of frame: 30.25" L x 24.25" W (76.8 cm x 61.6 cm)
