Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th C. CE. A finely painted antique Mexican retablo depicting a dramatic rendering of La Mano Poderosa or Los Cinco Personas theme, the composition including the traditional five figures who represent the Holy Family: Santa Nino de Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and Mary's parents, Ann and Joaquin - floating above the hand. The upward facing almighty hand with a center wound and dripping blood represents the stigmata of Christ and the Crucifixion as well as the life of Saint Francis. A chalice catching Christ's blood with seven lambs (a holy number of Catholicism representing the seven sacraments and seven deadly sins) drinking from the chalice (a reference to the Book of Revelations) is included in the composition as well as various articles of the Passion. The extrapolated meaning of this devotional image is one of protection and benediction. A wonderful example! Size: 13.75" L x 10" W (34.9 cm x 25.4 cm); 16.375" L x 12.75" W (41.6 cm x 32.4 cm) framed

Condition
Normal surface wear with some scuffs/scratches, slight darkening in areas, and bending commensurate with age. This said, the imagery is still strong. The frame shows some wear, but is otherwise very good and serviceable with new gallery paper and wiring on the verso.
