Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A beautifully painted Mexican retablo depicting the Holy Trinity - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost - each sitting upon clouds and dressed in flowing robes of blue, white, and red. Notice that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost figures all have brilliant golden triangular halos, a form that first appeared in the Renaissance, behind their heads, adding an unusual touch. Their feet rest upon a blue terrestrial orb symbolizing a globe with human figures, perhaps signifying their dominion over the universe. Interestingly, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are depicted as 3 identical personages in accordance with Byzantine tradition, with only the Father distinguished as he holds a scepter at the center. As the Son is located at the Father's right hand according to Acts 7:56, one can assume that the figure dressed in blue represents the son, while the figure in red is the Holy Ghost. Size: 6.75" W x 10" H (17.1 cm x 25.4 cm)
