Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A very large-scale retablo painted on canvas - a tender rendition of N.S. Refugio de Pecadores - Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners - set in an ornate free-standing copper frame (with brass sheet backing) presenting openwork crosses at each corner, abstract flourishes throughout, crowned by an openwork "M" with flourishes above, and standing upon scrolled feet. The Virgin wears a golden crown and supports a crowned Christ Child whose nude body is covered by a transparent robe. She dons a scarf that is drawn across her right shoulder, and her dark blue cape is initialed with her ciphers. The Christ child rests his right hand on her right arm and grips her right thumb with his left hand. Surrounding the Virgin and Child is a beautiful floral wreath. A touching scene that demonstrates the artist's fondness for intricate detail and composition. Size: 16.375" W x 20.875" H (41.6 cm x 53 cm); 25" W x 44.625" H (63.5 cm x 113.3 cm) w/ frame
In 1719, a Jesuit missionary brought a version of a painting originally created for an altar formerly at Frascati, Italy, in the style of Guido or Salvator Rosa, to the city of Zacatecas in Mexico. That painting inspired the locals to adopt N.S., Refugio de Pecadores as their patron, and the composition of this retablo was modeled upon that painting.

Condition
Areas of loss and repair to lower edge of the painting. Otherwise the painting has aged gracefully with charming craquelure throughout. The colors are still vibrant and the imagery is vivid. The verso of the canvas has darkened with age. Original stretchers but some wooden tabs added. The frame is quite nice and the metal has developed a rich warm patina.
