Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A tender rendition of N.S. Refugio de Pecadores - Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners - painted in vibrant hues on heavy gauge tin. In 1719, a Jesuit missionary brought a version of a painting originally created for an altar formerly at Frascati, Italy, in the style of Guido or Salvator Rosa, to the city of Zacatecas in Mexico. The painting inspired the locals to adopt N.S., Refugio de Pecadores as their patron, and the composition of this retablo was modeled upon that painting. The Virgin wears a golden crown and supports a crowned Christ Child whose body is covered by a sheer robe. The Virgin dons a scarf that is drawn across her right shoulder, as her rich blue cape flows over her red robe. The Christ Child rests his right hand on her right arm and grips her right thumb with his left hand. It is a touching scene, and this rendition clearly follows Rosa's tenets. Size: 10.1" W x 13.9" H (25.7 cm x 35.3 cm)
The bottom of the painting is inscribed "REFUGIUN PECATO," which identifies her as Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners, and "O.P.N.," which stands for "Ora Pro Nobis" meaning "Pray for Us." An annular drill hole at the top of the piece allows it to be suspended for display.

Condition
Minor losses to right upper and lower corners. Some slight bending to tin and chipping to areas of paint, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with impressive remaining pigments and detail.
