Oceania, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine model of an outrigger canoe carved from multiple wooden pieces that are attached via metal pins and woven thread. The narrow canoe body features a closed hull design with a rectangular fishing platform on top. An outrigger float is attached to three lateral boom arms with knotted threads. Attached to each end of the hull body is an abstract ornament with bifurcated lateral protrusions. Canoe models like this example were created to visualize future design improvements to a vessel while using minimal materials. Size: 17.75" L x 7.625" W (45.1 cm x 19.4 cm)
