Native American, Western United States, Plains region, Lakota (Sioux), ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful collection of 80 glass trade beads and 20 coyote teeth strung on a leather cord as a necklace. The trade beads are European in origin brough to North America as bartering items for the prosperous fur trade. The red spherical beads are Venetian white heart beads - white cores and covered with an exterior red surface. The rest are tubular beads in striated hues of yellow, blue, green, and white. All is symmetrically arranged with sets of three glass beads between the teeth. Size of strand doubled: 14.5" L (36.8 cm); tooth: 1.3" L x 0.25" W (3.3 cm x 0.6 cm); case: 16.25" L x 12.25" W (41.3 cm x 31.1 cm)
