Artist Johannes Gerardus Keulemans (J. G. Keulemans) (Dutch, 1842-1912), an original lithograph in colors entitled "Buceros Rhinoceros" (Rhinoceros Hornbill) from "A Monograph of the Bucerotidae or Family of Hornbills" (1892) by Daniel Giraud Elliot (American, 1835-1915) - the last of Elliot's ornithological monographs. Keulemans was a Dutch bird illustrator who illustrated many of the most coveted 19th century ornithological books. Elliot was an American zoologist who was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History in New York as well as a founder of the American Ornithologist Union. Keulemans' skillfully executed original colored lithograph presents three Rhinoceros Hornbills - admired by Elliot for their "formidable bill" and unusually long lashes - in a lush natural environment. Size: 15" W x 11" H (38.1 cm x 27.9 cm); 19.5" W x 16" H (49.5 cm x 40.6 cm) including mat
Zimmer calls Elliot's final monograph "a comprehensive treatment of the entire family of hornbills", hornbills being a genus between the Kingfishers and the Hoopoes that inhabited Ethiopia, Asia, and Australia.
