East Asia, Japan, late Edo to early Meiji Period, ca. mid-19th to early 20th century CE. A cast copper okimono or sculpture of an elderly man seated on a pedestal, representing Jurojin, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Jurojin is a Chinese Taoist immortal known as God of Wisdom & Longevity and adopted into Japanese culture by Zen Buddhists. Jurojin is also a personification of the Southern Polar Star and an auspicious symbol of good fortune. Here he is cast in detail with his traditional scholar robes cascading around his shoulder and legs, and a staff held in front. Size: 2.5" W x 4.5" H (6.4 cm x 11.4 cm)
