East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. This stunning lacquered and gilt wood zushi shrine houses a wood statue of Fudo Myoo, a wrathful protector of Buddhist law. Every area with gilt has been XRF tested, with gold purity ranging between 67% and 86%! Fudo is depicted standing atop a rocky outcropping on a tiered pedestal. Behind him is a red openwork flaming panel, and one foot is planted, turned outward, creating a sense of immobility, symbolizing his role as "the Immovable One." He holds a gilt sword in one hand and a lasso made of metal wire in the other, while a brass charm is riveted to his chest. The wrathful deity glares with a scowl, emphasizing his fierce nature. Set within the lacquered wood shrine with hinged doors with a hook clasp, the verso has a Japanese inscription that appears to be a dedication of the shrine to a town. Size with doors shut: 7" L x 4" W x 17.5" H (17.8 cm x 10.2 cm x 44.4 cm); open doors: 15" L x 5" W x 17.5" H (38.1 cm x 12.7 cm x 44.4 cm); gold quality: 67% to 86% (equivalent to 16K+ to 20K+)
Fudo Myoo, also known as "The Immovable One," is a wrathful deity in Japanese Buddhism, specifically revered as a protector of the Buddhist faith. He is often depicted in fierce, scowling expressions to ward off evil and protect practitioners from negative forces. His attributes, such as the sword (to cut through ignorance) and the lasso (to bind evil), are symbolic of his power to protect and guide those who seek enlightenment.
