East Asia, Japan, Late Meiji era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A stunning cast bronze and gilt statue of an Oni demon standing upon a wooden pedestal, with a sinuous dragon wrapped around his torso, its head resting on his shoulder like a minion. The Oni wears a fundoshi over short pants made from tiger skins, with their mouths forming his pant leg holes. A pair of petite horns adorn his head, and sharp fangs are visible in his open mouth. The surface texture and additional details are superb - tiger skin hair, dragon scales, and scrolling coiling patterns, all washed with 2% gold gilt. The feet are secured to the wooden pedestal with bolts. Attributed to the Miyao Eisuke workshop style. Miyao Eisuke (1850-1920), founder of the Miyao Company in Yokohama, was known for his bronze ornamental sculptures, often gilt and finely crafted as mythological figures, which resonated with Japanese culture and attracted Western collectors for their exotic appeal. Size: 3.75" L x 2.5" W x 9.75" H (9.5 cm x 6.4 cm x 24.8 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
