A hand-colored lithograph depicting President Lincoln and his family, all dressed in period attire and gathered in a parlor. Mary Todd Lincoln sits at the left with her hand on her son's back and a handkerchief in her other hand. The boy, likely Tad Lincoln, holds a snare drum and drumsticks. Eldest son Robert stands behind his mother, wears a military uniform, and places his left arm on her chair. Beside the President, another boy, purportedly Willie though resembling Tad, is reading a book. His father also holds a book, with one finger keeping his place. A cloak is draped over his chair. A floral centerpiece, a keepsake box, another book, as well as a document upon which Lincoln's arm rests - are on the table. The Capitol Building and a seascape are visible through two windows. Size: 23.25" W x 17" H (59.1 cm x 43.2 cm); 25.75" W x 20" H (65.4 cm x 50.8 cm) sheet; 28.625" W x 23" H (72.7 cm x 58.4 cm) w/ mat
Following the strife of the Civil War, prints that depicted famous individuals and their families were very much the zeitgeist. With the wartime destruction still on the minds of many, these images of harmonious togetherness and domestic life were very popular. Since President Lincoln and his family never actually posed together for an artist or photography, artists would use photographs of the individuals to create a family scene like this one following Lincon's assassination.
