Europe, Italy, Neoclassical Period, ca. 1820 CE. A wonderful collection of twelve magnificent framed plaster Grand Tour intaglios set in two matching frames, wonderfully arranged against a purple velvet ground and under glass. The intaglios represent the first twelve Roman Emperors - aka The Twelve Caesars (Dodici Cesari): Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian. Each intaglio was created in an oval form and has a gilt gadrooned border surrounding a portrait of a Roman emperor in profile, facing right. Similar intaglios were made in Italy by artists such as Bartolomeo Paoletti (1758-1834) and Pietro Paoletti (1801-1847) in their workshop in Piazza di Spagna, Rome. Examples of the Paolettis' casts are conserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut. Size: each intaglio measures 1.625" W x 2.125" H (4.1 cm x 5.4 cm); each frame measures 11.75" W x 9.625" H (29.8 cm x 24.4 cm)
The Grand Tour was a traditional European trip - a rite of passage - primarily enjoyed by the upper-class from about 1660 until the realization of a large-scale rail system in the 1840s. Although traditionally associated with British nobility and wealthy elite, individuals from Northern European Protestant countries on the Continent also took Grand Tours, and in the second half of the 18th century wealthy individuals from the United States, South America, and other countries overseas took part. In addition, the middle class began to engage on their own journeys once rail and steamship travel made the trip more affordable. The Grand Tour exposed travelers to music, works of art, as well as architectural landmarks. In addition to this education, The Grand Tour provided an opportunity to purchase special souvenirs like these intaglios that were not available in one's home country.

Condition
These intaglios have not been examined outside the frames but appear to be in very good condition save a few scuffs, abrasions, and minute stains. The intaglio of Vespasian may have a fissure across the neck, but this may also be deposits. Some losses to decorative borders on the frames, but otherwise intact as are the glass fronts.
