Europe, Italy, ca. early to mid 19th century CE. An evocative, sensual marble sculpture of a young woman. She stands in the contrapposto style, with her weight shifted so that one knee is bent while her other is straight. Her head is tilted downward, the fingers of one hand curled and her chin resting against one raised index finger. Her other hand rests on her hip. She is carved to wear diaphanous, Classical-style clothing and to have Classically-styled hair with a double row of curls framing her face and the rest of her long hair tied up in a double knot at the back of her head. A garland is around her wrist. Her face is smooth, her eyes downcast, and a thoughtful, rather than cheerful, expression is on her serious face. Size: 7.25" W x 22.85" H (18.4 cm x 58 cm)
The Neoclassical period saw immense western European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology, and especially the discovery of Pompeii. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it. The Italian neoclassical movement was the earliest manifestation of the style - beginning around 1750 - and lasted the longest - until around 1850. Napoleon, who ruled much of Italy during the early 19th century, was a major fan of Italian neoclassical art, and had the famous sculptor Antonio Canova create the Venus Victrix for him from marble. Venus was a very popular subject of the Italian neoclassical movement, and the woman depicted here is likely meant to be her as well.
