Near East, Persia or Ottoman Empire, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fabulous handsewn embroidery depicting a lion holding a shamshir sword in front of a sun surrounded by an elaborate floral design and 4 star and crescent motifs, all in threads of purple, periwinkle, turquoise, lemon, lime, silver, and olive on black, white, maroon, and turquoise fabrics. This example represents a fascinating combination of ancient symbols as the lion and sun started with the Safavids and came to represent the Qajar dynasty, Persia, and Shia Islam, while the star and crescent is a traditional emblem of the Ottoman Empire and Sunni Islam. Size (of embroider): 18" W x 17.75" H (45.7 cm x 45.1 cm); Size (of frame): 20" W x 19.75" H (50.8 cm x 50.2 cm)
