Indonesia, Bali or Java, ca. late 19th century CE. An antique iron betel nut cutter with wonderful silvered details in the form of a nude female figure lying on her side, holding her left arm along her body with her hand touching her buttocks, her right arm bent at the elbow, and gripping a betel nut in her hand. Her legs serve as the handles which may be opened and closed to cut betel nuts between her upper and lower body. She peers forward, presenting a beautiful face with eyes, nose, brows, and mouth silvered and delineated in bas relief - her tranquil visage crowned by a wavy coiffure that is also silvered and delineated in bas relief. Although nude with pronounced silvered nipples, she is bedecked with a beaded necklace, bracelets, belt or hip wrap, and anklets - all of which are silvered and delineated in bas relief as well. Both sides of this fascinating piece are embellished with details. The artist went so far as render the sensuous curve of her spine as well as her tiny toes! Size: 9.125" W x 5.375" H (23.2 cm x 13.7 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.
