South Asia, India, Karala, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive wooden panel carved in high relief, depicting a man wearing an lavish dhoti. He stands on an integral shelf, with a small devotional figure standing behind his right leg. His body is richly adorned with jewelry, and he holds a knife in one hand. Upon his shoulder is a parrot. His gaze is intense, with large almond-shaped eyes, a hooked nose, full lips, elongated earlobes with large ear ornaments, and a headdress. This may be a representation of Kamadeva, the god of love, who is often depicted as handsome young man. A modern ring has been added to the back for displaying this panel! Provenance: private New York City, New York, USA collection; ex-collection of Dr. Edward A. Spiegel (1931-2020) professor of astronomy at New York University and Columbia University who worked on convection theory and on the application of fluid dynamics to astrophysics and was the first to discover Chaos Theory. As a professor, students enjoyed his accounts of his meetings with other famous scientists such as Paul Dirac and Stephen Hawking.
