South Asia, India, ca. 19th C. Wow! A stunning hand-carved wooden corbel of sizable form skillfully carved with a standing male deity flanked by a pair of rearing horses atop a gorgeous tiered base of five registers; two incised with a lattice pattern surrounding three featuring a curvilinear motif. Set up on their hind legs, both horses mount a triangular ornament decorated with a swirling phytomorphic design, on top of which the male god stands with elbows bent and both hands resting on his rotund belly in a praying pose. The round-faced divinity stares out serenely from large lidded eyes above a sharp nose with wide nostrils and closed bowed lips. All three figures are lavishly dressed; the horses wear leg bangles and elaborately sculpted saddles and harnesses, while the male deity dons an ornate belt upholding a knee-length skirt, bangles, arm bands, a collared necklace, two voluminous asterisk-shaped earrings, and a lovely headdress. A gorgeous architectural element from India! Size: 9.375" L x 6" W (23.8 cm x 15.2 cm); 19.875" H (50.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Repaired from three pieces; two large and a reattached right leg of the right horse with fissure and adhesive visible. Expected nicks/chips and a few stable hairline fissures commensurate with age. Otherwise excellent with rich earthen deposits in recessed areas.
