Central Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A remarkable hand-carved marble statue of Durga, the Hindu goddess of war, depicted sitting upon a lion - her vahana or sacred mount - with several outstretched arms holding tools of creation and destruction given to her by each of the principal gods of Hinduism during her battle with Mahishasura, the buffalo demon. A crown, consisting of a half-moon shape decorated with incised lines resembling a sunset and a feather-shape also adorned with carved lines, rests atop her head of long hair that falls around her heart-shaped face. Her large almond-shaped eyes calmly peer outward above a pointed nose and plump lips forming a warm smile. Though ironic for a deity of war, her tranquil visage is typical of the goddess, as it symbolizes her use of violence as a necessity when fighting evil versus out of vanity or egotism. Embellished with an openwork throne that mirrors the shape of her head, her arms are bejeweled with numerous bracelets on each hand, while her neck bears a garland falling past her belt onto the lap of her robe, a thick collar-like choker, and a necklace with a small heart charm that rests on her bosom. She sits with one leg bent upward upon her roaring lion, symbolic of her courage, who strides forward on rectangular base with his tail curled under his body. As Hindu gods have several avatars, Durga is the demon-fighting form of the Hindu mother goddess, Parvati. A stunning portrait of one of the most important goddesses in Hinduism. Size: 18.75" L x 6.875" W x 27.25" H (47.6 cm x 17.5 cm x 69.2 cm)
While Durga is a form of Parvati, she also has nine manifestations herself, called the Navadurga. This example is likely the form of Kushmanda, who is believed to have created the universe in the flash of her smile, as she displays here. Traditionally, she holds a water pot, a bow, an arrow, and a lotus flower in her right hands, and a pot of nectar, prayer beads, a mace, and a discus in her left.
