Central Asia, Indian, British Colonial era, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely brass helmet composed of multiple attached panels with a pair of drooping brims. The domed helmet is surmounted with a columnar crest with flowing foliate motifs in repousse, and a chin strap with multiple hoop-form links hangs from the wooden plugs and one floral side roundel. Additional foliate applique panels outline the tops of the brims as well as the verso. An ornate repousse emblem on the front reads "Kings Dragoon Guards" surrounded by a buckled belt, radiating bands of stippling as well as columns of broad leaves, and all is surmounted by the British royal crown. Size: 7.625" W x 11.125" H (19.4 cm x 28.3 cm); 18" H (45.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Helmets like this are rare examples of British militaria from the time of the Indian Mutiny (also called the Sepoy Mutiny). The King's Dragoon Guards of the British Raj were called in for reinforcements during the response to the uprising of Indian workers and civilians against the oppressive forces of the British East India Company. The Indian Mutiny, which lasted from May 10, 1857 to November 1, 1858, saw some of the bloodiest conflicts the British Army had ever suffered during its occupation of India. During some of the early waves of civilian rebellion, entire regiments of British soldiers - one of which being the King's Dragoon Guards - were completely wiped out.
