South Asia, Southern India, Tamil Nadu region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely cast brass sculpture of Shiva, the Hindu deity revered as both the creator and destroyer of the universe, depicted here as Shiva Nataraja (also Nataraaj, meaning "Lord of the Dancers"). Shiva is shown in a dynamic dancing pose, symbolizing the cosmic cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. He wears an elaborate headdress adorned with a crescent moon on one side and the sun on the other, while serpents radiate outward from behind his head. Cobras coil around his arms and ankles, reinforcing his divine power. In his upper right hand, he holds a damaru drum, representing the rhythm of the universe, while his upper left hand bears the agni flame, signifying destruction and transformation.
