South Asia, India, Madhya Pradesh, Bastar, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine brass sculpture of an elephant and riders, that also functions as a vessel for holding candles. The elephant stands on thick legs, the body compressed into a flat square surface, suitable for holding tea lights. A howdah, the large canopy with riders, protrudes from the top. The 4 figures are dressed and bejeweled standing upon hemispherical panels. The elephant is ornately adored with swirling applied wires and the trunk is turned upward, forming a cupped bowl. Every element of this piece displays impressive artistry, and the figures are highlighted in red and yellow pigments. Bastar is a tribal region known for its traditional techniques for casting bronze sculptures. Special statues of elephants, horses, gods, and goddesses were traditionally created for the Dussehra festival in Jagdalpuer, the Mandei spring festival.
