Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of 3 marine mammal bone amulets in the form of totemic animals, a bear, raven, and orca (killer whale). All are pierced for suspension on a cord or could be worn in the folds of clothing to provide protection and guidance to the wearer. Orcas are believed to assume the shape of humans and can walk on the land in disguise, while the raven is a trickster and powerful creature with mythical an ability that symbolizes creation and transformation. The bear is regarded as the ultimate protector, and Haida culture refers to the bear as their "Elder Kinsman;" hence, the animal was traditionally treated like an elite guest when killed.
