Native American / First Nations, Pacific Northwest Coast United States or Canada, Haida, ca. 20th century CE. A finely hand-carved spruce wood totem pole, painted in subdued polychrome pigments, featuring four stacked zoomorphic figures with an eagle at the top. Designed with a flat back, it is ideal for placement against a wall, likely intended for indoor display. Traditionally, totem poles stood in front of cedar clan longhouses, representing ancestral animal form guardians and telling the stories of lineage and identity. This particular piece comes from the collection of Dr. James Tait Goodrich, known for his acquisitions of Pre-Columbian artifacts, medical instruments, and antiques.
